db eats: Union Square Bar and Restaurant

Gig-goers at London’s O2 arena have a new dining option with the opening of the Union Square Bar and Restaurant.

Owned by the Inc Group, this marks the 24th addition to a portfolio which includes 24 pubs and restaurants across London, Leeds and Bristol.

The venue’s American West theme was inspired by The Anschutz Collection of Western art. The interior is decorated with replica images, native American sculptures and an early 20th century taxidermy display.

In keeping with its theme, the restaurant offers a comprehensive selection of American staples, from home-made burgers and steak, to New York cheesecake. However, head chef Alan Penney, has also roamed into the territory of classic European cuisine, with dishes such as lobster bisque and chicken liver parfait.

The wine list claims to be the most extensive of any O2 venue, and is certainly as wide ranging as the food menu.

Depending on taste and budget, guests can choose from a selection which stretches from house wines Lauquita Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot at £16.50 a bottle, right up to Château Latour 1990 for £1385 a bottle.

The middle ground offers some interesting options, including a bottle of Zind Humbrecht’s 2006 Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl (£75) and the 2005 Medalla Cabernet Sauvignon from Trapiche (£58).

If it’s cocktails you’re after, the bar features an impressive selection of alcoholic iced teas by the glass (£6.75) or pitcher (£14.95), each inspired by a different US state, from New York to Alaska and Indiana. The Champagne list reaches from Pannier Brut Sélection NV, available by the glass for £9, up to Louis Roederer Cristal 2002 for £310 a bottle.

Given the nature of the O2 venue, Union Square is trying to cater for a far wider audience than most, which explains the almost unnaturally broad focus here. On balance though, this appears to be one of the more upmarket O2 dining options among a sea of high street chains.

If you’ve already spent a fortune on concert tickets and travel, you may decide it’s worth rounding off the experience with a blow out dinner here.
