Ritz-Rothschild red proves sales success

A collaborative vinous venture involving upmarket London hotel The Ritz and Baron Philippe de Rothschild has yielded impressive results.

The Ritz Pauillac-Baron Philippe de Rothschild 2006 has become the Piccadilly hotel’s best selling red wine after just three weeks, encouraging head sommelier Thomas Sorcinelli to consider adding an accompanying white Bordeaux next year.
The bespoke red wine was placed on The Ritz bar and restaurant drinks list in early July at £50 by the bottle and £14 by the glass.
“After less than one month it is the best selling red at The Ritz and our regulars now come in asking for it,” said Sorcinelli.
The wine features a picture of the hotel’s façade on the label, as well as bearing both The Ritz and Baron Philippe de Rothschild names.
It was blended by Sorcinelli using Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot from the Rothschild vineyards in Pauillac, home of the producer’s first growth property, Château Mouthon Rothschild.
“The next wine will be a 2007 Pauillac and we hope to change the label each year, so it is collectable,” commented Sorcinelli. “We are also looking at doing a white wine next year, perhaps a Graves,” he added.
The hotel continues to list two house wines, The Ritz Chablis and The Ritz Claret, both at £42 by the bottle or £12 by the glass.
In December this year, the hotel is holding a dinner to further promote the new Rothschild wine, hosted by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, the majority shareholder of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA.
