Parker looks back at 82 and 90 claret

Investors in 1982 and 1990 claret can rest easy after Robert Parker tasted top wines from these two great Bordeaux vintages and confirmed, for the most part, his initial high scores.

Collectors will also be pleased to hear he believes recent vintages such as 2000 and 2005 will perform even better due to winemaking improvements.

Looking back at the leading labels from 1982 and 1990 the results confirm the greatness of these vintages, although Parker suggested we are still yet to see the best from Bordeaux.
“I believe some recent vintages, such as 1998 for St. Emilions, Pomerols, and Graves; 2000 overall; 2003 for certain northern Médocs in St. Julien, Pauillac, and St. Estèphe; 2005 overall; and 2008, will come close, and in many instances eclipse both 1982 and 1990,” he wrote.
Looking at his latest scores for the 82 vintage, on which Parker made his name, he confirms the 100-point status of Latour and Pichon Lalande, as well as Mouton, giving the latter label an optimum maturity of 2015-2050 – an indication of the longevity of the vintage. Lafite on the other hand scores 2.5 points lower than its initial 100-point position.
As for 1990, Parker confirms 100-point scores for Margaux, Montrose and Petrus while he gives Haut-Brion two-points more, taking its score from 96 to 98.
On the other hand, Mouton drops three, from 87-84.
