DNA identification developed for fine wine
A new identification technique using DNA has been developed to combat fraud in fine wine.
Called BioMaterial Genotyping, the latest process from Applied DNASciences can be used to detect genomic DNA in natural materials andauthenticate finished products from cotton to wine.
The company is also offering a service called SigNature DNA, which is used to mark products, leaving traces in inks, labels and corks, which can be screened using a hand-held reader.
SigNature DNA markers have already been incorporated into wine labels in a pilot project for Paumanok Vineyards.
According to recent estimates, counterfeit wine is believed to account for as much as 5% of the secondary market.
