Awards boost for Argentina

A record number of trophies were awarded at this year’s Argentina Wine Awards with bodegas Etchart and Trapiche scooping four of the 14 trophies. The wines were chosen from 512 entries hailing from 128 Argentine wineries in the third year of the annual competition.

Salta-based winery Bodegas Etchart demonstrated its expertise with Argentina’s signature white variety Torrontés by picking up the Dessert $10-$20 trophy with its Torrontés Late Harvest 2007, while the Torrontés $10-$20 trophy was awarded to its Ayres de Cafayate Torrontés 2008.

Bodegas Trapiche also received two trophies in the competition. It won the Chardonnay $20-$50 trophy for its Finca Las Palmas Chardonnay 2007 while the Trapiche Malbec Single Vineyard Vina Federico Villafañe won the highly-coveted Malbec $20-£50 trophy.

Talking of the awards, Wines of Argentina UK director James Forbes said: “I think the judges are spot on this year. Not only did they reward the obvious strengths of Argentina – Malbec and Torrontés – they picked up in a big way on the consummate skills of the winemakers as master blenders (17 of the top 42 awards are either white or red blends), who for my money, are on a par with the very best in Europe.”

The competition took place in Mendoza last month and this year’s judging panel consisted of 18 judges from five countries. The three UK judges were Charles Metcalfe, Sarah Jane Evans MW and Tim Atkin MW. Click here for further details on the results.
