William Grant and Rémy Cointreau deal

William Grant & Sons and Rémy Cointreau have announced plans for a European multi-market relationship. The deal includes a joint venture in France together with third party sales, marketing and distribution deals in the UK. William Grant & Sons’ subsidiary, First Drinks Brands, will become the distributor of Rémy Cointreau’s portfolio.

This announcement signifies a major development for First Drinks Brands. From 1 April 2009, its portfolio distribution will include brands Rémy Martin, Cointreau, Piper-Heidsieck, Charles Heidsieck and Mount Gay.

The future of French company Lixir will also be bolstered by the announcement. Lixir, which is jointly owned by William Grant & Sons and Maxxium will continue as an operating company with William Grant & Sons and Rémy Cointreau as equal shareholders. This is effective from 3 October 2009.

Gordon Dron, William Grant & Sons’ managing director Europe, said: “We are delighted to be working closer with Rémy Cointreau. There is a lot of synergy between the two companies which have complementary portfolios of premium brands and shared distribution requirements in some markets.”

Spyros Ghikas, Rémy Cointreau’s managing director Europe and Middle East said: “Our partnership with William Grant & Sons in the UK, France and Belgium fits in perfectly with Rémy Cointreau’s ‘Premium’ strategy.”
