Independent Retailer of the Year 2008

Taurus Wines

The effort that Rupert Pritchett puts into Taurus Wines is unmistakable, and the result is an independent store that, as one judge remarked, “does seem to really put customers first”.

This Surrey-based retailer, in addition to its reputation for customer service, and its list, has become known for unconventional tastings. There are currently plans to set up “refreshment stops” for a local riding club, as well as a tasting on a “land yacht” (which is apparently a bus). Another initiative is the “Booze Cruise with Hooves”, held on a horse-drawn carriage on the River Wey.

Every year the store holds a Summer Wine Festival in the style of a farmer’s market, with about 30 producers attending.

Technologically, Taurus has implemented a number of interesting innovations. The store’s EPOS system has a facility to send a text message to consumers when deliveries are due, and will soon be able to email only relevant information to consumers.

The numbers speak for themselves. In 2007, Taurus achieved 15% growth, with average invoices now over £200.
The work that Pritchett has put into Taurus will undoubtedly continue to pay off in the future. The company currently has a mailing list of 2,500, for example. Despite this, and positive growth figures, Pritchett is aware of room for improvement, by introducing better value wines, additional services or behind-the-scenes activity in aspects such as environmental strategies.

In addition to the commercial success of Taurus Wines, the judges felt they were rewarding a company that is “doing something right” and “obviously doing well in a tough sector”.
