Drinks Company of the Year 2008
Bibendum Wine
In the words of one of our judges, this award should be given to a company that has shown a fair degree of innovation, dynamism and a little bit of flair. It seems that Bibendum has done just that, scooping this award for the second year in a row.
Bibendum was deemed to have “risen above the bar†by our panel, which was looking for a company that had demonstrated its edge in a difficult market. One of our judges went so far as to say she was “spellbound†by Bibendum, on the grounds that it was one of the most exciting businesses she had ever worked with.
The “almost iconic†Bibendum was commended for its commitment to growth and development, social responsibility and innovation. Its product knowledge and communication skills were also praised: “It gets the tone right, explaining its products without being patronising.†The company was found to have excelled in all areas. “They are trying to do things better in every area, which is really exciting. Whatever they do, they do it well, leaving no stone unturned,†said one judge.
Despite being the largest independent buyer in the UK market, the company is still perceived as a small, edgy business – an interesting reflection on its client relationships.
“Bibendum is so far ahead of the rest of the industry there is almost no competition. It has helped to change perceptions and has become the template for running a successful wine business.â€
Bibendum was also voted the company most likely to change the drinks industry. It will be interesting to see whether the company scores a hat-trick next year. After all, Bibendum has yet to target consumers despite the potentially enormous consumer brand that lies beneath its surface.
