PROFILE: Down to wine business
d=”standfirst”>New Zealand’s internationally esteemed Montana winery, famous for its multi-award winning Sauvignon Blanc, has enlarged its portfolio to include further premium ranges
Montana has long paved the way in the New Zealand wine category, capitalising on its Sauvignon Blanc credentials and expertise, and this year continues to focus on premium wine-making and varietal innovation.
Founded in the 1940s, Montana was not only the first to plant modern vineyards in the Marlborough region but was also the first to make Sauvignon Blanc in the region. Later, in 1990, Montana Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was named “Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World” and today, Montana is the number one international New Zealand wine brand and the world’s number one New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
Montana is not only famed for its Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir production, it also excels with weighty, finely structured Chardonnay, as well as Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Guwurztraminer, Rosé, Brut Cuvée and, most recently, Pinot Grigio.
Montana has recently received a multitude of awards across its entire portfolio including the Champion Winery award at the 2007 Liquorland Top 100 and a gold and three silvers at the 2007 International New Zealand Wine Show. Golds were also achieved at the 2007 IWC and the Selections des Vins in Canada.
Montana Terroir Series
Recent additions to the category-driving Montana portfolio that reinforce the winery’s innovation and premium quality credentials are the two Terroir series. Available in both Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, these collections each comprise three individually styled wines and use fruit parcels that have been specially selected from key vineyard sites in regions that produce the best examples of both Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. With the same winemaking practices applied to all, the result is the creation of unique fruit flavours that clearly articulate the Terroir from which they came and the diversity and complexity of the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes. The wines come from very specific, small vineyard blocks and have been subtly crafted to help bring out the very best each terroir has to offer.
Montana’s winemakers have been making wine in Marlborough longer than anyone else and are therefore uniquely placed to appreciate the subtle sub-regional differences. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand’s signature wine on the global market, has famously intense fruit flavours and zesty acidity that make it the ideal varietal to showcase the regional characteristics of differing terroir. The Terroir Series Pinot Noirs come from three of New Zealand’s most prominent Pinot Noir regions; Marlborough, Waipara and Central Otago.
The Montana Sauvignon Blanc Terroir Series is available to buy at Vintage House, Soho, and is priced at £9.99 per bottle.
Montana Pinot Grigio 2007
Further demonstrating its leading role in category innovation, Montana has also recently launched its own Pinot Grigio interpretation. Set to be one of New Zealand’s most exciting launches this year, Montana Pinot Grigio 2007 is blended from grapes grown in New Zealand’s Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay vineyards and boasts delicate spice notes, which are complemented by lush pear and light pineapple flavours resulting in a textural palate balanced with natural acidity.
Montana Pinot Grigio 2007 is available to buy from Tesco, Booths, Threshers and Nisa, and is priced at £6.99.
Montana Letters Series
The Montana Letters Series, which is at the pinnacle of Montana’s range, features rich and powerful regional fruit flavours with layers of winemaking complexity. These wines are made from the highest quality fruit, selected from Montana’s top vineyards and married with “best in class” winemaking. Highlights include the Montana Central Otago Reserve Pinot Noir and the Montana Ormond Chardonnay, winner of five golds and two trophies last year.
