Heathrow Terminal 5 aiming for Michelin Star

The new Heathrow Terminal 5 will house a Gordon Ramsay restaurant when it opens on March 30. The 180-cover white tablecloth facility, Plane Food, is modelled on The Boxwood Café and has reportedly cost £2m.

Ramsay and operator BAA are aiming to secure the first Michelin Star for an airport eatery.

Commenting on this ambitious move, BAA head of category for food and beverage, Catherine Peachey, explains: “We wanted to make a really bold statement, to really challenge the way people perceive transport catering.” Ramsay, meanwhile, has declared that Plane Food “will become one of the most stunning venues for a restaurant anywhere in the world.”

After almost two decades on the drawing board T5 will finally open to a fanfare next month, and BAA is confident that it has assembled a commercial offer that will push back the boundaries of what is possible in an airport environment. As well as Ramsay’s fine dining offer, the terminal will boast a further 22 F&B outlets, nine of them from brands that have never previously operated in an airport including Wagamama, Carluccio’s and Apostrophe.

The retail offer looks set to be similarly impressive. Renowned travel retailer World Duty Free is expected to unveil a stunning offer boasting a number of original new features – including The Connoisseur Bar, an upmarket tasting facility developed in conjunction with Diageo (as reported in last week’s db newsletter). See the February issue of the drinks business for a more detailed preview of the new F&B offer set to open at T5.
