UK cider sales top one billion pints
Cider is continuing its surge in popularity with sales bypassing one billion pints a year in the UK for the first time. The latest industry figures show sales are up by 26%, equating to more than 2,700,000 pints sold every day.
The total cider market continues to grow faster that any other drinks category in Britain, posting a 21% increase in volume in the off-trade and 30% in value (Nielsen MAT to March 2007).
The National Association of Cider Makers (NACM) spokesman Simon Russell said: “These figures prove that the recent rise in popularity of cider has changed the fortunes of the industry for good.
“The off-trade has supported this growing interest in cider by offering their widest range of cider and perry to date. However, there is still room to offer a wider variety of products covering the great breadth of different styles of cider and perry available.
“We expect the cider market to continue to perform well as producers continue to innovate with new products and continue to invest in marketing and advertising to support them.”
In particular, pear cider, or perry, is showing rapid growth. Tesco supermarket, has reputedly experienced a 300% increase in sales, and is selling over 3,000 cases a week.
The biggest selling perry brand in the UK is the Swedish Kopparberg.
Scottish & Newcastle has announced it is to launch the Finnish pear cider brand Upcider in the UK in August.
