Chile leapfrogs Spain by market share
Latest Nielsen numbers indicate that Chile has overtaken Spain to become the sixth largest supplier to the UK market by volume.
The stats demonstrate that the Latin American country is responsible for 6.9% of the market (MAT 17.07.07), just ahead of Spain on 6.8%. Chile exports 9.86 million cases to the UK, with a value of US$189m.
The news represents the latest milestone in Chile’s impressive rise in the UK. Just four years ago the country controlled just 5.8% of the UK market – in the last year alone volume is up by 10% while value has risen by over 20%. And, most crucially, Chile appears to be making headway in its effort to raise average price: sales of wine priced £5-10 are up 26% in the year to June. Average bottle price has increased by a modest 5 pence to £3.82.
But it is not just the UK where Chile has scored an impressive performance – for the first time total exports have topped the US$1bn mark.
Highlighting the positive performance, Wines of Chile UK Director Michael Cox said: “Chile is making steady and sustained progress across the board in both volume and value, and this is testimony to the hard work being done by the wineries, and the growing awareness of Chile’s naturally diverse styles of quality wines.”
