VINEXPO PREVIEW: It’s show time!

Vinexpo is upon us once again, presenting a huge number of exhibitors and speakers from all over the world. New additions to the event this year include the luxurious Club de Lac and the Marketers exhibition

If the sheer diversity of drinks at this year’s LIWSF has left you with a touch of tasting fatigue then get gargling with lager and flossing with plently of fluoride as Bordeaux’s biennial Vinexpo is fast approaching. Doors open on Sunday 17 June and close on Thursday 21 June, letting in an estimated 48,000 professional visitors to meet with more than 2,300 exhibitors.

Having been launched in 1981 with 524 exhibitors from 21 countries in attendance, the exhibition has matured into the largest gathering of wine and spirits professionals in the world. In 2005 there were a staggering 2,370 exhibitors from 43 different countries, who managed to attract a grand total of 48,958 visitors. It’s no surprise then that the 14th Vinexpo exhibition is set to be this summer’s hot ticket for those in the trade.

Stands for this year’s exhibition were apparently booked out by last November and they will be showcasing thousands of exhibitors from 45 countries. Obviously all the main producing regions such as France, Italy, Spain, USA and Chile, will be present in abundance. A number of intriguing newcomers, such as Slovakia, will also be represented for the first time.

Of course Slovakian wine is not the only original prospect to tempt the seasoned Vinexpo-goer. There is also the introduction of the Marketers exhibition in the Convention Centre, which sees Vinexpo branching out into the exhibiting of sales material and marketing techniques necessary to spur wine and spirits sales in both the on- and off-trade.

Also, for those of you who think wine tasting, idyllic landscaped gardens and luxury facilities make rather appealing bedfellows, then you need look no further than the newly installed Club du Lac, which replaces the Club des Marques in 2007 and plays host to some of the industry’s leading manufacturers.

Yet Vinexpo is not simply content to display the products of the trade, it has also provided an authoritative analysis of market trends and predictions in the form of a global research project commissioned from drinks analyst IWSR. The survey has been commissioned to tie in with this year’s fair and has been extensively conducted over 28 wine producing countries. Its findings concerning British drinkers are particularly revealing and provide further encouragement for a healthy British interest in this year’s Vinexpo exhibition.

The research predicts that within the next three years, the UK wine market will grow to such an extent that Britain will spend more on still and sparkling wine than any other European country with sales reaching £5.5 billion; between 2001 and 2005 UK wine sales had already risen by 25% to reach more than £4.9bn.

Also, British wine drinkers are prepared to pay more for their grape; sales of bottles priced at more than £2.90 accounted for nearly half of volume sold in 2005 which represents a rise of 40% since 2001.

Wine lovers
The popularity of wine in the UK is partly the result, according to Vinexpo’s research, of its increased popularity with the 20-25 age group who, compared to similar age groups in the USA and Japan, consider wine to be stylish, civilised and good for the health. However the survey also highlighted that young British drinkers are anxious about their lack of knowledge when it comes to wine, believing wine to be a product requiring special expertise. Indeed they claimed that there is a mystique surrounding wine and that labelling often confuses while failing to inform.

Yet overall, as Robert Beynat, general manager of Vinexpo, has rightly commented, “This study shows very positive views to wine by young adults in the UK. It is clear that wine drinking is something they aspire to and they want to know more about.” Indeed the introduction of the Marketers exhibition to this years Vinexpo should prove highly beneficial in this respect.

So if you want to keep your finger on the pulse of both established and emerging brands this year and combine tasting and essential business, then there is no better guidebook to the trade than a few days spent sauntering round Vinexpo.

Although with over 41,000 sq metres of floor space, a guidebook is exactly what you may need. Therefore here is the drinks business’ breakdown of the wealth of tastings and conferences which will be on offer at the show this year.

Le Club du Lac

In previous years Vinexpo has provided relaxing lakeside luxury for top exhibitors and their guests with its Club des Marques; a series of invitation-only outdoor pavilions. This year organisers have gone one better and replaced it with the even more palatial Club du Lac. Situated on the same site outside Hall 1, the club provides 15 air-conditioned pavilions, each with two floors overlooking the lake, fronted by an outside terrace and over 250 sq metres of private landscaped gardens. The restaurants that had occupied the space overlooking the lake will relocate to the site previously occupied by the Club des Marques. Thirteen of the industry’s major players will therefore be proudly exhibiting in Le Club du Lac in an atmosphere of five-star grandeur.

Marketers Exhibition

Another new initiative for the 14th Vinexpo is the inclusion of the Marketers exhibition – a section offering equipment to enhance wine and spirit sales in supermarkets, retailers and restaurants. Based in the Convention Centre and dealing in point of sale material for the on- and off-trade, the exhibition will contain over 2,600 sq metres of merchandising material, accessories and decoration, as well as packaging and design solutions. Robert Beynat, general manager of Vinexpo, explains that: “Marketing and selling techniques are becoming a major preoccupation for all segments of the on-trade and off-trade. Marketers will reveal a whole new world of professional selling.”

What’s more, the exhibition can be easily accessed by the innovative new “floating bridge”, which connects the Convention Centre and the Exhibition Centre and at 430 metres long, sets a new world record for a bridge of its type.

Jury Decouvertes

With global sales of spirits set to rise 6% over the next three years to reach 2.3 billion nine-litre cases (according to IWSR research carried out for Vinexpo), it seems only appropriate that this year’s Jury Découvertes have decided to introduce a new category for excellence in spirits. Total sales of spirits worldwide are predicted to reach more than US$180 billion by 2010 and Vinexpo are clearly keen to mark that fact.

An entirely separate jury has been appointed to award the accolade and will select, after three days of blind tastings, one spirit for their Grand Prix. The wine jury will also select, as in previous years, three wines for the Grand Prix – one for red, white and rosé. Both juries will consist of sommeliers and journalists from 15 countries and will be presided over by distinguished oenologue Jo Gryn.

Jean-Marie Chadronnier and Robert Beynat will be announcing the winners on Wednesday 20 June in the press centre, so swing by to see which brands made the grade.
