Coca-Cola to launch new lighter PET bottle
Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) has announced the launch of new lightweight packaging for its 500ml bottle format, developed in conjunction with WRAP. Weighing 24g (2g less than the current model), the new pack will reduce the amount of packaging that the company uses by over 700 tonnes per year.
CCE has shown strong commitment to reducing the amount of packaging that it uses – the trial for this latest innovation has required testing of over 4 million units. WRAP project manager Peter Skelton commented: “This project with CCE is an important part of WRAP’s work with leading retail brands and manufacturers to demonstrate that packaging can be optimised without affecting customer perception, product quality or safety.”
Christine Watson, CCE project manager, said: “CCE has made significant progress on lightweighting PET bottles over many years … it is a significant technical challenge (and this represents) a significant step forward. The trial offered no guarantee of success and WRAP’s support in this project was highly valued.” The first new bottles will roll off the production lines in September, and by the end of 2008 over 350m lightweight bottles will be produced each year.
