Arsonist causes US$250 million damage
A businessman based in Sausalito, California, has been found guilty of arson and fraud having set fire to a wine warehouse to hide the fact he’d sold wine that he had been paid to store. Mark Anderson destroyed wine with an estimated value of US$250million.
In October 2005 Mark Anderson started a blaze in a 244,000 square foot wine warehouse on Mare Island destroying 80% of the 6m bottles stored in the building. The lost wine was owned by 92 wineries and 43 private collectors. Wines Central, who owned the warehouse, is planning to reopen the space next year when the US$12m worth of repairs are completed.
