EU bans crown from pint glasses

The crown stamp on pint glasses throughout the UK, guaranteeing size and safety, will soon be replaced by a CE mark, meaning “Conformité Européenne”. The EU-wide certification apparently does not allow for any other markings on the glass, meaning that the crown, in use for over 300 years, will not feature on any new glasses.

The move has drawn criticism, with some seeing the EU as responsible for the demise of a British tradition. A conservative MP, Philip Davies, for example, commented, “It is sad that after 300 years one of our traditions is on the brink of extinction.” The Campaign For Real Ale, however, confirmed that the imperial pint measure is not under threat. "It is sad from a nostalgia point of view, but the pint itself is safe," said research and information manager Iain Loe. Existing glasses will apparently not need to be replaced.
