Northern Ireland names a date for smoking ban in public places
The smoking ban in Northern Ireland will begin on 30 April 2007, almost a month after the date announced by Wales for its implementation. This leaves only England to set a date for next summer’s ban on smoking in public places, including pubs, restaurants and clubs.
Announcing the ban in Northern Ireland, health minister Paul Goggins commented that there had been an “overwhelming level of support [for] this legislationâ€. Despite calls from the licensed trade, the Department of Health (DoH) has so far refrained from announcing a definite date for the ban in England. In addition, predictions made in the national press for a date in June 2007 have been dismissed by the DoH.
