Business Appointments: Boardroom musical chairs

The number of board changes among drinks firms rose this month despite the summer holiday season. Several companies changed their chairmen, including Fuller, Smith & Turner, Pantheon Leisure and Pepsi Bottling Group.

At Fuller, Smith & Turner, it was announced that chairman Anthony Fuller would step down in 2007 and that he would be replaced by Michael Turner. Fuller has been with the firm since 1963 (after service with the Life Guards) and has held the positions of MD, executive chairman and, currently, non-executive chairman. Turner joined the firm in 1978 from Ernest & Whinney and was appointed CEO in 2002.

At Pantheon Leisure, Bill Weston replaced David Bernstein as chairman. Bernstein is a highly experienced director who currently serves on the boards of Carluccio’s, Ted Baker and Blacks Leisure (chairing the latter); in the past he has also chaired French Connection Group, Adams Childrensware and Manchester City PLC as well as being joint MD of Pentland Group. Weston is a former senior partner of Foster & Cranfield Ltd and a non-executive director of private firms.

It was also announced that John Cahill has stepped down from the role of chief executive of Pepsi Bottling Group and will also step down from the chairmanship and leave the board in 2007. Cahill joined the PepsiCo finance function from RKO Hotels in 1989 and worked his way up to the position of CEO in 2001 and chairman/CEO in 2003. He is also a director of Colgate-Palmolive. His replacement as CEO (now president/CEO) is Eric Foss, who is also a director of United Dominion Realty Trust. Foss joined Pepsi-Cola in 1982 and worked his way up to the position of COO in 2005. He will not be taking over as chairman, however, since that post will go to Barry Beracha on Cahill’s retirement. Beracha has been an independent director of the company since 1999 and is also a director of McCormick & Co. He has been chairman/CEO of several private companies, including Campbell Taggart and Eagle Snacks as well as an executive VP/division CEO of Sara Lee and VP/group executive of Anheuser-Busch.
