Business appointments: Major move at Morrisons
This month saw several significant changes at the top of retailer Morrisons, including the announcement that Sir Kenneth Morrison would be leaving the board in January 2008. Sir Ken joined the eponymous company in 1952, was appointed chairman/MD in 1956 and became executive chairman in 1997.
It had already been announced that CEO Bob Stott would be stepping down in September 2006. But in May it was further added that he would be replaced by Marc Bolland, currently COO of Heineken. Bolland joined Heineken as a trainee in 1986, eventually being appointed to the board in May 2001 and COO in October 2005. Since July 2004 he has also been a director of Manpower Inc.
It was also announced that David Cook would step down from the position of CEO of CHE Hotel Group with effect on November 30 this year. Cook was appointed CEO in January 2004, having originally joined the firm in August 2001 as group finance director. He subsequently served as CEO/FD before his appointment as CEO.
There were several board departures associated with take-overs and delistings, including those of Urban Dining, which was acquired by Clapham House Group and was scheduled for delisting on June 12. The executive chairman and co-founder, Glen Tomlinson, stepped down on May 22 having become executive chairman on the departure of the CEO in November last year. He was a former group finance director of Pizza Express.
Another delisting was of Center Parcs (UK), which left the exchange in mid-May. Among the directors who were serving with Center Parcs at that time was John Matthews, who is also Chairman of Regus and Crest Nicholson.
