An amateur gardener is to establish Manchester’s first vineyard, after persuading fellow allotment holders to grub up their marrows and potatoes and replace them with vines, a report in the Manchester Evening News noted.

The pioneering gardener and wine enthusiast, John Firth, believes that global warming has raised the temperature in Northern England sufficiently to allow for grape production. He says he will be planting a "hardy German variety" and hopes to have the wine in bottle in five years time. "I don’t see why we can’t grow grapes here because our summers are getting hotter," he was quoted as saying.

The group of allotment holders have already cleared the plot for planting and will be looking for an expert to help in the winemaking process as soon as the vines start to produce fruit. Château Manchester may become a reality.
