“standfirst”>Waitrose own-label Champagne is festively slashed to £9.99, while Majestic sportingly knocks a third off 24 Champagnes
Christmas has come early at Majestic this month; as from November 1 until January 30 there is 33.3% off 24 Champagne SKUs and at least 20% off all Champagne and sparkling wine in a multibuy deal. There is also the chance to buy any two Chilean wines and save 20%, two New Zealand wines and save 15%, or two Californian wines, saving 20%.
Meanwhile, at Oddbins, from October 24 to November 20, it’s a malt whisky lover’s heaven with an offer to buy two and save £10 on a range of Balvenie, Laphroaig and Glenfiddich whiskies. Multibuy mechanics do seem to be the order of the day and there is a huge selection of wines from France, Spain, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand on a 20% off one bottle, 25% off three or more, and 30% off six bottles deal, including famous names like Campo Viejo, Carmen, Xanadu and Montana.
The Co-op (all offers October 24 to November 13) is doing its bit for the Royal British Legion with a price reduction on French Connection Chardonnay and Merlot Reserve, both from £4.99 to £3.79. Both wines, which carry poppy motifs, are on promotion to mark Remembrance Sunday and a donation is made for each bottle sold. Other French offers include a half-price deal on Winter Hill Grande Reserve Chardonnay and Merlot, both half price (£5.99 down to £2.99), and a three for £10 deal on own-label Vin de Pays d’Oc Merlot and Chardonnay, usually £4.49. Branded Aussie offers include Penfolds Rawson’s Retreat Merlot 2004, down from £5.99 to £4.49, and Peter Lehmann Wildcard Unoaked Chardonnay 2005, down from £4.99 to £3.99.
France is also in focus at Waitrose (October 31 to November 27) with 20% off selected French wines, including Bouchard’s Fleurie 03/04, down to £7.19, and Chablis 2004 from Cave des Vignerons de Chablis, also now at £7.19. And who says Champagne’s pricey? Waitrose own-label (made by Piper & Charles Heidsieck) will be down from its usually very reasonable £14.99 to a jawdropping £9.99, a 33% reduction. Waitrose will also be rivalling Oddbins’ malt whisky offer with £5 off a selection of malts including The Glenlivet 12 Year Old, down to £18, Laphroaig 15 Year Old, down to £27, and Talisker 18 Year Old down to £34.
Down the road at Booths there are some familiar Aussie names on the promotions list over the Christmas period (all offers October 11 to January 1), including Oxford Landing Cabernet / Shiraz and Chardonnay both down from £5.49 to £3.99, Brown Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon, down £2 to £5.99, and Banrock Station 3-litre bag-in-box is reduced from £15.69 to £12.69. For Sherry fans a litre of Harvey’s Bristol Cream is going for the price of a bottle, down from £8.69 to £5.99. Fizz is also on offer with £4 off a bottle of Moët or Veuve Cliquot, down to £19.99 and £20.99 respectively, or for the more financially challenged, Freixenet Codron Negro is on a two for £10 deal, from £7.49
Our stealth shopper has been indulging his (or her) sweet tooth this month with a round-up of some liqueurs and spirits in this important pre-Christmas trading time. It’s certainly worth shopping around, unless you’re after Amarula that is.
