Lucy Warner Thierry’s South Africa

There is only one place in Australia where you can go cow racing or so an Australian Sailor told me last week.

The drinks business: The first question has to be, Pinotage: love it or hate it?

Lucy Warner: Simple, if it is made by Bertus Fourie at Diemersfontein I love it…otherwise….!?

db: Which African animal to you most identify with?

LW: Bottlenose dolphin!

db: I don’t think that requires any explanation! Do you have any pets?

LW: No way, can’t stand them. They smell, drop hairs and lick their bottoms. Foul!

db: Name three vital things in your handbag?

LW: Lip gloss, liver tablets and ATM card.

db: Give us a fascinating or pointless piece of information from your wealth of knowledge.

LW: There is only one place in Australia where you can go cow racing. Or so an Australian sailor told me last week.

db: When were you last hanging around with Australian sailors?

LW: We were with the Australian naval ship Anzac last week when it was in Jo’burg and one of the officers was telling us about it, and that’s about all I can remember about it really. South Australia somewhere, that’s about as interesting as it got.

db: So I take it you haven’t been cow racing then?

LW: No, or not yet anyway – something to aspire to perhaps.

db: When was the last time you played a sport?

LW: Last weekend, it was rounders on the beach!

db: Are you a competitive person?

LW: No way.

db: Name your top, three favourite fruits in order of preference.

LW: That would have to be be: banana, pineapple and melon.

db: What’s the most valuable thing you own?

LW: My fabulous collection of LK Bennett shoes and boots.

db: Ooh, jealous! What’s the most valuable thing you’ve ever broken?

LW: My heart.

db: What book are you reading at the moment?

LW: I have two on the go at the moment actually, the first is Himalaya by Michael Palin and the second is Eva Luna by Isabelle Allende … for the fifth time!

db: If you were an author, what would your nom de plume be?

 LW: Polly Pocket.

db: Any particular reason for that choice?

LW: A Polly Pocket is someone who’s so organised and precise and has everything in the right places and is neat and tidy.

db: And are you?

LW: No, I’m most certainly not. So it should be Polly Pocket Not, really. An ironic nom de plume, you could say.

db: Interesting, I’ll keep an eye out for that one. What kind of books would you write?

LW: I’d write real-life stories about how it is better to have loved and lost, than to live with the psycho for the rest of your life!
