It seems Spain is fighting to raise the profile of its wines in the UK.
In mid-April a Spanish Wine Action Group (SWAG) was formed, consisting of representatives from 14 high-profile Spanish wine importers from the UK.
Richard Macadam of United Wineries was voted chair, with Lynne Sherriff MW as secretary.
The aim of the action group is to agree strategy and promotional activities with exporters and distributors, raising the profile of quality Spanish wines among UK wine buyers and consumers.
Lynne Sherriff, who has been appointed by Wines from Spain to handle trade relations, commented, “We are delighted at the level of interest in companies collaborating to move the Spanish sector forward.
“We have some great people on board, forming a fantastic think-tank for Spain – we look forward to great things.”
The newly appointed director of Wines from Spain, Maria José Sevilla, said, “With such a high-calibre steering committee in place, in tandem with the comprehensive promotional programme and the new team at Wines from Spain, I feel we are in a position to tackle the New World head on.”
