SIDEWAYS, the film about two middle-age friends, one a wine buff, the other a soon-to-be married actor, on a road trip around California’s vineyards, has had a marked effect on sales of wine in the US.
SIDEWAYS, the film about two middle-age friends, one a wine buff, the other a soon-to-be married actor, on a road trip around California’s vineyards, has had a marked effect on sales of wine in the US.
Miles, the wine enthusiast, enthuses about Pinot Noir (notably in a late-night, alcohol-fuelled monologue), and ACNielsen has reported a sales increase of 16% for Pinot Noir, to reach 370,000 cases for the 12 weeks ending January 15.
Furthermore, it’s American Pinot which is growing, with California experiencing growth of 33%. Miles is damning of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, although his favourite wine is Cheval Blanc which typically contains half of each variety.
