Brandy bound nation
Germans like their brandy, and are rather partial to a drop of schnapps – but bitters is where the growth is at…
THE TOTAL SPIRITS market in Germany stands at around 42 million cases which places Germany in 10th place in the world ranking of spirits countries. Brandy is the leading spirits category, accounting for just under a quarter of all spirits consumption.
The other major categories are liqueurs, schnapps and bitters, which account for a further 45% of the market between them. All of these categories, with the exception of bitters, have seen their volumes decline continuously, especially brandy which has lost 5 million cases since 1998.
All remaining categories account for just 30% of the market between them. Although volumes remain relatively small, flavoured alcoholic beverage volumes have increased dramatically to account for around 3% of the market (at spirits equivalent level).
