Anis seeds oof despair
The slow decline of traditional anis spirits in France is being matched by the gradual growth of whisk(e)y
THE TOTAL spirits market in France stands at around 37 million cases which places it in 12th place in the world ranking of spirits countries. Anis spirits are the leading category, accounting for over a third of all spirits consumed.
Whisk(e)y accounts for a further 31% with liqueurs, including the popular fruit crèmes and cassis, accounting for a further 15%. The other main categories are rum, bitters and brandy. White spirits, such as vodka and gin are relatively minor categories.
However, vodka has seen volumes grow by over 10% per annum since 1999. Whisky(e)y, liqueurs, rum and gin have grown steadily, while anis spirits, bitters and brandy are all in long-term decline, as is the small tequila segment.
