LATEST figures show the value of Scotch Whisky exports rose 2.3% to £961m in the first six months of 2003 compared to the same period last year.
The half-year figures released by The Scotch Whisky Association record an 18% leap in malt whisky’s export value to £121m, and a 22% rise in volume to over 22m bottles. Blended Scotch faired less well, rising 1.5% to £740m, while falling in volume by 2.8% to 273.6m bottles.
"An increase in the value of Scotch exports during the first half of 2003 is very encouraging at what was a difficult time for the world economy due to international unrest and the SARS outbreak," said Ian Good, chairman of the Scotch Whisky Association.
The value of exports to key Asian markets like South Korea and Taiwan rose 4.6% and 23% respectively. Exports to the EU were up 9.6%, while sales to the US increased by 1% in value and 6% in volume.
