German spirits
FABs, bitters and vodka are bucking the declining trend in the German spirits market. Brandy remains in pole position
THE TOTAL SPIRITS market in Germany stands at 45 million cases which places it at number 10 in the world ranking of spirits countries.
Brandy is the most important category but its share has declined significantly in recent years. Liqueurs and specialities are holding second place at around the 17% mark with schnapps volume under some threat in third position.
Bitters, in fourth, are prospering while vodka has shown some good recovery recently. All other categories are showing trends of continuing decreasing volume, except flavoured alcoholic beverages which achieved significant growth in 2002.
