The Wine and Spirit Association has disparaged proposals by the government to deal with smaller scale smugglers more leniently. 

The UK Sentencing Advisory Panel, which issued the advice, has said that alcohol smuggling and bootlegging is a non-violent, nonsexual offence, with no direct victim.

Director of the WSA, Quentin Rappoport, said that bootlegging was a "matter for serious concern, with wide social consequences", however small scale it was.

The Brewer Scottish and Newcastle (S&N) has closed its offer for cider producer HP Bulmer. The brewer said that it now controlled 92.3% of the company after acquiring valid acceptances for 49,027,927 of Bulmer’s ordinary shares.
