Bordeaux leads Fine Wine 1000 in January
Following in the footsteps of the Fine Wine 100, the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000 index also made gains in January with Bordeaux leading the way.
The index rose 1.1% in January, the same as the Fine Wine 100*, and it was the constituent Bordeaux sub-indices that led the way, leaving them at their highest level since April 2014.
It was the ‘Bordeaux Legends 50’ index that led the way for Bordeaux overall, the older, collectible vintages such as 1982, 2000, 1990 and 1996 from Lafite, Petrus and Haut-Brion striking a chord with buyers and the index ended the month up 1.5%. The broader Bordeaux 500 index, based on the first growths, their second wines, Sauternes and Left and Right Bank sub-indices, rose 1.4%.
Italy continued its good progress, rising 1.2% and even the Rhône index, which has suffered a fairly turgid two years, finished last month up 0.9%.
The worst performing index was the Champagne 50. Probably suffering from its normal post-festive slump, it dipped 0.1% in January and is down 2.6% over one year.
*The Fine Wine 100 tracks the 100 most widely traded labels on the Liv-ex marketplace while the Fine Wine 1000 takes in a broader, more comprehensive sweep of the market with separate sub-indices for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italy and others.
