Following on from Cape Wine in September, Wines of South Africa hosted a barbecue at the Consul General’s residence on the Peak.

With Mike Ratcliffe, owner of Warwick Estate in Stellenbosch as the special guest, the outdoor barbecue event or “braai” was to celebrate “all things South Africa, the wine, the food and guests’ memories of Cape Wine,” said Tersina Shieh, who attended the event.

Members of the drinks trade and the media sampled biltong, boerewors and Savannah Dry Cider as well as tasting Villiera Monro Brut 2008, Pongracz Rosé NV and Bellingham Bernard Series Whole Bunch Roussane 2014 from importers Northeast and wine’n’things and Vioafonte Series M, Warwick Three Cape Ladies, Warwick Sauvignon Blanc and Warwick The First Lady Unoaked Chardonnay.

Royal Oak also provided a range of Boschendal, La Motte and Leopard’s Leap wines.

Shieh continued: “Braai is the South African word for barbecue and it is a serious national social occasion. This event leads from Cape Wine last month and also to mark South Africa’s National Heritage Day (also called National Braai Day) on 24 September. I would like to thank South Africa Consul-General Ms Gwala for kindly opening her private residence for this casual but exclusive networking event.”

The next WOSA event will be “Braai & Wine” at the Ladies Recreation Club on 14 November organised by wine’n’things and it plans to make an annual October braai month to celebrate South Africa and promote its wine and culture.
