South African wines shine in Macau
The Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) hosted a lavish dinner last night to show off some of South Africa’s most prominent winemakers.
The South Africa Consul General Ms Gwala welcomed guests at Macau’s IFT
With the South Africa Consul General, Ms Phumelele Gwala as special guest, the event brought together the media, the F&B trade and members of the Wine Society of Macau.
The 50 guests started with cocktails made from Leopard’s Leap Shiraz and Chenin Blanc by the mixologist of the soon-to-be-open Pacha Club, before progressing to the starter of ostrich carpaccio served with 2012 Richard Kershaw Chardonnay and 2012 Bellingham Old Vine Chenin Blanc.
In her welcome speech, Ms Gwala said that South African wines “were building a steady and loyal fanbase in Macau and Hong Kong” and “that it’s really time to show what we have to offer, with our different terroirs and grape varietals.”
Hemel-en-Aarde favourite, 2013 Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir was paired a Walker Bay abalone and morel tart and the dinner finished with 2012 Sadie Family Old Vine Series Treinspoor and 2006 La Motte Pierneef Shiraz and Viognier blend.
David Wong, the executive assistant manager of the IFT commented: “We are so excited that we are bringing the spectacular South African wines to Macau and we can explore them together as wine lovers and professionals. The food and wine were a brilliant match with rock star winemaker Eben Sadie Old Vine series and classic Pinot Noir from Hamilton Russell and it’s an honour to be able to host everyone here at IFT.”
The evening decadently ended with a free-flowing South African brandy buffet before the Hong Kong guests piled back on the ferry.
