Rioja revellers soaked in wine battle
Thousands have taken part in Rioja’s annual wine fight, drenching each other with buckets of wine.
Every year around 10,000 people descend on the Spanish wine-making town of Haro in La Rioja for its annual La Batalla de Vino de Haro, gathering in white t-shirts with various containers of red wine and drenching each other with gallons of wine.
Known as the “wine fight”, the festivities begin on 28 June and continue throughout the night into the streets of Haro, with its origins stemming from St Peter’s Feast Day on 29 June.
The fight takes place in the foothills of the Bilibio mountain with participants using everything from buckets to water pistols and sponges to drench each other with gallons of wine.
Around 130,000 litres of wine is said to be thrown during the tradition.
