Bordeaux holds on as month progresses
Bordeaux is keeping ahead on Liv-ex as January progresses but Italy has begun creeping up the charts at the mid-way point.
Looking at trading in the second week of this month, Liv-ex reported that despite Bordeaux and the first growths taking a slight back-step as the month has gone on, demand has stayed strong.
Bordeaux’s regional share of trade by value last week was 79.3% and although this was down from the 87.6% in the first week if it can continue in a strong vein until the end of the month it may be able to better the 81.8% share it saw in December.
Mouton Rothschild’s 2005 continued its successful run and was the leading wine label by value last week with a 5.3% share.
Lafite 2009 was only just behind and 1996 Montrose and 2009 Haut-Brion were also some of last week’s top wines traded by value.
As was 2011 Sassicaia and Liv-ex noted that last week was particularly strong for Italian wines, the region accounting for 7.5% of all trade by value – bigger than Burgundy.
Aside from Sassicaia, trade was also strong for Guildalberto 2012 and Fuligni Brunello Montalcino 2008 and 2009.
The 2006 and 2009 vintages of Henschke’s Hill of Grace and the 2004 Vega Sicilia Unico were also highly traded.
