Smart money seeks out 2008 Bordeaux

As the trade awaits Parker’s commentary and scores for Bordeaux 09, it is interesting to see him look back at 2008.

Given the quality, small crop, and of course distraction caused by the 2009’s hype, last year’s releases not only appear good value but are likely to appreciate in price.

It is for these reasons Parker writes in his newsletter that “2008 is a vintage that smart money will seek out”.

Reassessing the year he describes 2008 as a “classic vintage with some very strong wines”, and still “reasonably priced”.

In last week’s Fine Wine on Thursday newsletter we pointed out that this year’s predicted high pricing will arouse increased interest in older and scarcer vintages.

An upcoming report in May’s edition of the drinks business also reminds merchants to remember the 2008s.

Margaret Rand recalls that a tasting of 2008s at Millésima in Bordeaux earlier this year revealed surprisingly good quality.

“It was always mixed,” she notes, “but the wines have settled down and smoothed out, and the level (at least of the wines Millésima was showing) was very high.”

In fact, Parker writes, “There actually may be some Pomerols and St.Emilions that eclipse what those châteaux did in 2009.”
