Timothy Taylor’s Brewery releases its first ever canned beer

Traditional family-owned West Yorkshire brewery Timothy Taylor’s has revealed that its first ever beer to go into cans will be Hopical Storm.

The Keighley-based brewer has selected the Hopical Storm, which is a 4% ABV triple-hopped pale ale which originally launched in the on-trade in cask before becoming its first keg beer back in 2020, due to being “more accessible” than its other beers.

Timothy Taylor’s chief executive, Tim Dewey, said: “The decision has been welcomed by operators who might not necessarily have the cellar space or throughput required for a draught beer and off-trade retailers who saw the potential for a refreshing triple-hopped pale ale that is more accessible than higher ABV beers in the category. “

Dewey added: “This is a new approach for a brewery that was established in 1858, but one thing that is never compromised, no matter how a Timothy Taylor’s beer is presented, is quality. So, whilst Timothy Taylor’s core business remains in cask beer, Hopical Storm has become a core keg product but can also now be served in can in a wider range of hospitality venues, at home or at outdoor events with drinkers reassured that they will still enjoy ‘that taste of Taylor’s’ they have come to expect.”

Hopical Storm has been brewed using five UK-grown hops in three stages of hopping – Cascade and Whitbread Goldings in the copper, Cascade and Chinook at the hopback stage, then dry-hopped with Jester and Ernest. The sessionable pale ale is registered as vegan-friendly and its canned launch has already secured listings in selected Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Ocado, Booths, and Waitrose stores with a retail price of £3 per 440ml can.

The launch will be supported by a full calendar of marketing activity, sampling and presence at events.
